” I wonder, rhetorically, if we have forfeited our right to dream. What would happen if human consciousness were to transcend death; might it acquire an infinite capacity to see into anything, present or past; to perceive complex patterns of our lives? Will we be able to think for ourselves without being told what has happened in our world by two-bit television hacks reading prepared scripts for mass consumption?

Each of us has to become responsible for our actions. At the level we are discussing, real thinking is one. Turn off the television. Big brother is not simply the Big, Bad State watching over us; it is we, the people, turning on the television

and letting them brainwash us with the garbage we are fed as part of the daily diet.

Throughout the world today, because of the widespread collapse of real education and debasement of television and the press, huge number of people will believe anything those at the top are prepared to tell them. The mystique of television, instead of growing more stale, grows stronger.

Thinking is hard. Thinking independently is very hard, because it requires one to study, to read, to understand. Understanding engages responsability, engendering personal action to sustain our liberties and freedoms. It is much easier to be told what to do and think and say. “Tell me, Daniel, what should I do”, is a phrase repeated ad nauseam in almost every email I receive from loyal readers. Empowerment. People must take responsability for their own actions. How?

We must question what we are told. We must think for ourselves. We must be confident of our own worth, and love one another in the sense that, just as we will do no harm to ourselves, neither will do harm to others. Love is a work in progress. Love is a circle that comes back to those who give it, and like a circle ripples into a greater circle with each act of love completed.

Contemporary implications of compassion imply more demanding standards. Equality is one of these; no one is to be casually sacrificed. Of course destinies make people not equal but, rather, incomparable, equality is a measurement and dignity is immeasurable.

We must take on the richness of human spirit, create a world bound together by our underlying heritage of compassion, charity and courage, not the sectarian, simplistic, visceral millenarianism they have been feeding us. Of all the languages, the only eternal language is that of thought.

Memory saves us from oblivion.
